Raising kids is more than just feeding and housing them. Editorials we’ve written are filled with examples of where we, as a society, have failed. Whether we are talking about how Erin Andrews was treated, sexual assault in our society, treating each other with respect or the sex offender registry, we believe all of these are tied together in the quest to raise good citizens. We also believe the sex offender registry helps keep our kids – and community – safe. Full Opinion Piece

With sex offender issues, many media outlets don’t want both sides
Sex offender registries do nothing to keep us safe. It has been proven time and again that sex offender registries have made no difference in the incidence of sex offenses. It is well known that over 95% of sex offenses are perpetrated by a relative or acquaintance. It has also been shown that over 95% of new sex offenses are be persons who have never been on a registry. So how does a registry keep us safe? It has also been shown that very few people look at the registry. It has been proven by many studies and statistics that most sex offenders do not re-offend. What the registries do is tear apart the lives of 100’S of thousands of people, not just the offender, but their families and children as well. Registries make it so that people cannot find a place to live, find a job, live where they want, can’t travel, and the list goes on, for crimes that were committed in many cases decades ago with no new offenses. The registries do way more harm than good. Registries should be done away with.
Everyone is entitled to his opinion, regardless of how misinformed it may be.
My opinion is the Op Ed author should inform himself on the subject matter before flapping his gums in such manner as to undermine his credibility.
One problem with such a public pulpit is that one must exercise some diligence in filtering out the insults to the Constitution in favor of true substance.
Every day I’m forced to add to my long list of names that bother the crap out of me, including Senator Joe McCarthy, Nancy Grace, and Donald Trump.
The most effective thing we can do is to respond with comments or letters to the editor ASAP . We all have good points to respond with . It helps more to say something before any decision is made . We can all pile on we need to be aware of any commentary or opinions supporting the SOR even if it is out of state . A simple flag or note to us and we would be heard .
The true meaning of the word “balance” means to weigh equally. It does not mean put more weight on one individual’s rights over another. If that was the case our legal system becomes a joke. I guess it already is, no facts, just speculation for the legislature to take away rights. Guilty of a potential crime with no way to prove innocence.
I don’t want to sign up with this paper or join Facebook. I will try to email the paper. Anyone who wants to modify these words and post them, please do. No other comments really challenge the incorrect use of this word balance. It is used over and over again in defense of this registry and what they are saying contradicts its logical use.
Everyone keep commenting on a respectful and educational way !
It should be so simple to get to the bottom of this. Get the number of sexual assaults or abuse on children committed by someone on the registry versus the number of people who are NOT on the registry who committed these crimes. It is as simple as that! Soon, everyone will figure out that these crimes are mostly committed by someone NOT on the registry, a family member, teacher, relative, clergy person, etc. Please, someone do the numbers!!!!!
